An archipelago of 115 islands, located in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar and approximately 1600 km east of Kenya, the capital and largest city is Victoria. Previously a British territory, Seychelles reached independence from the UK in 1976. Flights from the UK take approximately 12 hours.
The Seychelles are hot and humid year round, with an average annual temperature of 84°F (29°C) usually tempered by sea breezes, and an average sea temperature of 81°F (27°C). The islands sit outside of the hurricane belt so storms are rare. Tropical rains fall during January and February but quite often when it rains on one side of the island; it is clear on the other.
Fine beaches and turquoise seas are among the main attractions and the Seychelles is also home to an array of wildlife, including giant tortoises and sea turtles. Much of the land is given over to nature reserves.
A low tax jurisdiction, several firms have established themselves on the island to the extent that the Seychelles International Business Authority has been established to oversee the growing offshore industry. Seychelles is the smallest nation in the world to issue its own currency and citizens of the Indian Ocean archipelago enjoy a high per capita income, good health care and education.
